Fujitsu Green Laptops: Using The Biodegradable Chassis

Fujitsu Biodegradable Laptop

I must admit that I was surprised knowing this thing. Do you know that Fujitsu LifeBook’s body is made up of a plastic obtained from cornstarch? Yes, it’s definitely expensive but it’s green or environment friendly. The biodegradable chassis will go away within several months if you put it a landfill. But real plastic will take decades.

As reported, using cornstarch-based plastic also results in 15 percent less carbon emissions. The bottles seen in the left of the above image show progress from corn kernels to plastic.

Fujitsu has also used the plastic for other products, such as on cell phones and point-of-sale terminals. The products right now are only available in Japan.

On their NewsBlog, CNET wrote:

Following pollution problems and the oil shock of the ’70s, Japan embarked on a somewhat aggressive environmental program. Although environmentalism rises and dips, energy efficiency programs have remained somewhat strong. As a result, Japan remains one of the largest markets and producers of solar power.

We expect to see such products more often in US and Europe soon. The cost of bioplastic will also go down in the coming years.
