Canned Noodles Are Getting Popular in Japan

Japanese Noodles in Cans

I bet not so many people know who invented cup noodles for the first time. Momofuku Ando was the inventor and later founded Nissin Foods. He was a successful mid-century entrepreneur who provided post-war Japanese citizens with a cheap and delicious alternative to real food. Mr. Ando died on January this year of a heart attack.

Now, noodles or ramen in a can comes out and getting popular in Japan.

“Canned noodles are emerging as a hit product across Japan following last year’s rising popularity of canned oden in Tokyo’s Akihabara district”,

reported by mainichi daily news.

The noodles in can are served out of vending machines. So, they can be consumed right away without the need of hot water since the vending machine keeps it hot all day. The noodles come from konnyaku (gelatinized yam?) to prevent them from going soggy when they soak up the noodle soup.

Fujitaka, a Kyoto-based vending machine manufacturer, was the first company to come out with the product. As reported, various flavors from other companies are now also available. Hungry? Nyam…nyam..nyam…
